I’ve made up my mind, so do not confuse me with the facts! ~ Funny saying that illustrates holding an irrationally obstinate opinion
Let’s be honest… we all have our biases, don’t we? We have things we hope to be true, that we want desperately to be true… systems and processes and people that we’ve trusted and want to continue to trust. We even do that with our way of life. We all buy into a particular philosophy, a way of living that guides our decisions.
But then something very real happens that contradicts… blatantly… that which we want to be true. It could be signs of danger in your health, a teetering stock market, an outright lie from a trusted ally. Or like those in the first century, it could be something positive, something good… the fulfillment of your story, which is what Jesus was both to Israel and the world. We discover, in the resurrected Christ, the fulfillment of our story. However, the 1st century Jewish leaders did not want to be confused with the facts. Their minds were made up. How about you?
The reason why we dig our heels in, irrationally and stubbornly on any issue… is that 1) we have to admit we were wrong, and 2) it requires real change. However, change in the face of truth is what will ultimately save your life. And that’s … real life. ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
