Who are you… really? What defines you at the core of your being? Where do you find your identity?
Is it something from your past… something negative… something positive? Some people gain their identity from their race, their family name, their country of origin, their heritage, the religion they grew up on… the side of town they grew up on. Others from the college they went to, their career, or maybe their role in their family – a mom or dad, or their role in their company, or their church. Others find their identity in something negative like poverty… or destructive behaviors passed down in your family… or addictions. Truth is, people find their identity in so many things, but can I tell you that none of those are to define who we are as human beings. The bad things… but not even the good things.
Our identity, as humans, first and foremost, comes from the image of God. However, since the world and the original model has been broken and distorted, our identity is now reclaimed and made new in and through Christ. That gives us hope, no matter what our past may be. Folks, knowing who you are … gives you confidence when everyone else tries to redefine you in “their image,” or when society tries to tell me “who I am.” You are a son or daughter of the King … may we live our lives in light of that. And that’s … real life. ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
