Real Life

Quick … name 3 famous donkeys (real life or fiction) in world history… go!
The first one for me was easy… “Donkey” from Shrek. Eddie Murphy’s classic voice made “Donkey” one of my favorite characters of all time. Second, for me, was Eeyore, from Winnie the Pooh. That loveable, yet very pessimistic, “Debbie-downer.” And third, and yeah, it’s probably because I’m a pastor… but it’s Balaam’s donkey in Numbers chapter 22. Unlike fiction, this donkey really did speak. It’s a crazy story, and one you should check out. But as we come to the weekend of “Palm Sunday,” there is another famous donkey worthy of note… the donkey that Jesus rode into Jerusalem in what is called the Triumphal Entry. This donkey would be the symbol of so many things. Humility. Peace. The fulfillment of prophecy. The arrival of the Messiah, the King. The donkey was a sign that this king, Jesus, although all-powerful, did not need to saber-rattle to prove it. The donkey was a symbol that as king… Jesus would be victorious, and bring victory…but would do so peacefully, not antagonistically or to incite violence or start a war. His victory would come through the cross… victory over sin and death. And he extends that victory, that peace to you and I today. Have a blessed Palm Sunday weekend! And that’s … real life. ~ Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
