One of the greatest signs of humility is when you are able to rejoice with others when they are blessed. ~ Steve Rowe
Think about it. When others get something that you’ve always wanted … that job, or salary increase, that house, or have that baby… or whatever it is… quite often our first reaction is jealousy. And it really hits us when they get it at a much earlier age or stage in life than where we currently are. However, may I suggest an alternative way to react. See, these moments should be a moment of joy, celebration… a recognition of grace and God’s blessing. It frees us from comparisons, of feeling like everything should be “fair,” and it allows us to rejoice with others when they are blessed. It is the way that two relatives in the first century responded… first to each other, and then to God. They were Elizabeth, and her cousin/relative named Mary. Elizabeth was old, but God allowed she and her husband, Zechariah, to conceive a child at their age. Mary, was only a teenager, a virgin, not married, but was pregnant too… but she, by the Holy Spirit, carrying the Messiah. Rather than comparing, they humbly rejoiced for each other, and the roles each got to play in God’s unfolding plan. And they were joyfully grateful to God for their own blessing, and the blessing in the life of the other. As we celebrate the Advent of Joy, may we do the same. And that’s … real life. ~Pastor Steve Rowe – Eaglebrook Church
